Where to stay in San Francisco, CA: The Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel

San Francisco is what I like to call an eclectic city that intersects art, history and culture. You want to stay at a hotel that reflects that sentiment, The Clift, fits that bill. Maybe you are here on a vacation, work trip, or for the locals like me, you are looking for a staycation– whatever the reason, let’s dive into why the Clift is an excellent choice.

Located at 495 Geary St, San Francisco, CA 94102, not only is the Clift in the heart of downtown San Francisco, but close to the iconic Union Square and the amazing shops and restaurants too

  1. Central location - Not only is the Clift in the heart of downtown San Francisco, but close to the iconic Union Square and the amazing shops and restaurants too! Public transportation is also very easy to come by if you want to explore other neighborhoods in minutes–as SF is a quaint 7x7 city.

  2. Recent renovations - in 2019 the Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel underwent some major renovations that still honor the history of the old design, but modernize the look and feel of the building with a new lobby, new meeting rooms for business, as well as the suites being completely redesigned and revamped.

  3. Dining- Another new addition is Frederick’s a cafe and eatery - restored in its original location within the hotel. It opened one month ago, but I expect this new spot to grow in a life of its own because the design is absolutely stunning and the food and presentation is something you really don’t see at an affordable cost. As you can tell from my expression, I thoroughly enjoyed my meals here. Not only is there food–but a bar to boot! The Redwood Room is still very much a classic staple bar in the area, but upon entering you are greeted with warmth, and a sexycolorstory, as the name suggests, the room tonally, is fiery and red. This space is perfect for intimate conversations between friends or two lovers.  I did not get to spend much time here due to an alcohol allergy I recently developed, but I loved the aesthetic. A historical fun fact: the Redwood Room opened its doors immediately after the prohibition era.

  4. Other Amenities and Perks- After my stay September 24-26 stay I found out there are some incredible offers like saving up to 25% off their new suites, a complimentary full breakfast (subject to availability) available at Frederick’s, A peloton in-suite for private use to stay on track with your fitness goals, and even overnight valet parking with in-and-out privileges so driving into the city is no problem!

Prior to the renovations I had the opportunity in 2019 to stay at the Clift with some girlfriends and the look and feel are honestly night and day. It went from an old glam vintage look (which was stunning to experience) to more of a minimal luxury and quirky pop art vibe. The designer really honored the history and look, but transformed the space into a modern classic!

My stay was gifted by The Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel, but all thoughts & photography are my own.
